Plus size capsule wardrobe: the basics and a 30-piece checklist

Build a plus size capsule wardrobe: how many pieces you need, which basics to start with, a color plan, fit rules and a 30-piece checklist.

A plus size capsule wardrobe is a small set of well-fitting, versatile pieces, usually 25 to 40 items, that all mix and match. Start with neutral basics you already wear: tees, jeans, black pants, a cardigan, a jacket and comfortable shoes. Then add a few colors you love and fill gaps slowly, choosing every new piece by fit and how many outfits it makes.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

Stitch Fix describes it as "a small, curated collection of versatile, interchangeable clothing items designed to be worn repeatedly in different combinations." The point is fewer decisions and more outfits. When every top works with every bottom, ten tops and five bottoms already give you fifty combinations.

It also helps the planet. The EPA estimated that the US generated 17 million tons of textiles in 2018, and landfills received 11.3 million tons of them. Buying fewer pieces that you actually wear is one small way to cut that down.

How many pieces do you need?

There is no magic number. Earth Day's toolkit says not to fixate on one. Common starting points:

Most people leave out underwear, sleepwear, loungewear and workout clothes. Decide your rules once and stick to them for a season.

What fit rules matter most in plus sizes?

A capsule only works if every piece is comfortable enough to wear on repeat. Fit is the filter:

Which basics should you start with?

Tees and jeans do the most work in almost every capsule. Our Heavyweight Cotton Tee is 100% combed cotton with an oversized fit, in M to 3XL and six colors (Onyx, White, Cream, Olive, Mocha and Charcoal), so you can pick two or three neutrals that work together. Our Stretch Skinny Jeans are cotton and spandex stretch denim in M to 3XL, in Light Wash, Royal Blue, Onyx and Gray Wash. Both ship from our partner warehouse in China, so order early in your planning.

If you want a starting point already put together, The Everyday Set combines the stretch skinny jeans, the heavyweight cotton tee and the belted utility shirt to wear over it. That is three pieces that make at least four outfits on their own. Check each size chart, since the shirt runs XL to 4XL and the jeans and tee M to 3XL.

How do you keep a capsule wardrobe working?

Start small. Even ten pieces that all work together will make getting dressed easier this week, and you can grow the capsule from there as you learn what you actually reach for. For outfit ideas built from these basics, see casual weekend outfit ideas.

Questions

How many pieces are in a capsule wardrobe?

Usually 25 to 40, according to Stitch Fix, depending on your lifestyle and climate. Courtney Carver's Project 333 challenge uses 33 items for 3 months. There is no official number.

What are the basics of a capsule wardrobe?

Neutral tees, one or two pairs of jeans, black pants, a cardigan, a versatile dress and a jacket, per Earth Day's toolkit, plus shoes and a few accent pieces.

Is a capsule wardrobe harder in plus sizes?

It can take longer to find pieces that fit well, which is exactly why a capsule helps: you put your effort into fewer, well-fitting basics that work together, instead of many pieces that almost fit.

Do shoes and accessories count in a capsule wardrobe?

It depends on the method you follow. Stitch Fix includes shoes in its 25 to 40 item range. Most people leave out underwear, sleepwear and workout clothes.
