A cozy gift says "rest, you deserve it." A gift in the wrong size can say something else, even when nobody meant it. Here is how to get the size right, gently, and how to choose gifts where size barely matters.
Why is size the hardest part of a clothing gift?
Because fit is the most common problem with clothes, period. In a 2023 Coresight Research survey of US apparel retailers, 53% named size and fit as the top reason for online apparel returns. And the National Retail Federation reported in 2025 that retailers expected about 17% of holiday sales to be returned. A little planning can save her a trip to the post office in January.
How do you guess someone's size without asking?
- Check a tag. A robe, sweatshirt or pajamas she already loves are your best clue. Then compare with the size chart for the gift, not just the letter.
- Ask someone close to her: a sister, a daughter, a best friend.
- Think about how she likes to wear things. Some women love loungewear roomy, others like it closer to the body.
- Never size down to make a point. Choose the size that would feel comfortable today, not the size you think she wants to be.
- Torn between two sizes in a relaxed piece? We would pick the larger one. A roomy robe still feels like a hug. A tight one goes back in the box.
Which cozy gifts are easiest to get right?

How to read a size chart for someone else
- Lay a piece she already wears flat and measure it, then compare with the chart measurements.
- For a robe, check the length, so you know where it will land on her.
- For pajamas, look at the pant length as well as the letter size.
- If her clue points between two sizes in a relaxed piece, go with the roomier one.
When should you order holiday gifts?
